And The WINNER IS.....

"In 2004, I was diagnosed with invasive metastic breast cancer at the age of 36; I knew I had to change my lifestyle. I also knew I could no longer be 10-15lbs overweight as a health care worker with breast cancer. Health Care Workers need to advertise good health and habits. As a patient, I do not want to see a doctor or nurse who is obese, out of shape and smoking in the parking lot. If we cannot take care of ourselves, how can we take care of our patient’s needs? In order for me to feel like I was contributing to my recovery, I started to work out everyday between chemo treatments. My boyfriend bought me a mountain bike for my birthday, the year I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I fell in love with cycling. A lung transplant patient I see a few times a year inspired me to ride a "Century" in Solvang Ca. I signed up for the Century Ride and bought a road bike a month before the event. I had no idea what was in store for me. 5 years later, I have done 10 centuries; I am 20 lbs lighter and found a subculture of people who love to cycle. My body has rewarded me. I am doing things I never thought I could. There is no (‘t) in can! Life is a journey that keeps the fire burning. "
